[IR52 Jang Young-sil Award] BK Technology 'Cut-off Modular LED Lamp'

2022.11.21

'Cut-off modular LED lamp' developed by BK Technology won the IR52 Jang Young-sil Award in the 41st week of 2021.
Recently, LED lights can be easily found in homes and buildings. Compared to conventional incandescent bulbs,
which use only 5% of their power to produce light and waste 95% as heat energy,
LEDs are highly efficient as they can convert 90% of electrical energy into light energy.
However, outdoor lighting such as street lights and security lights are not easy to replace despite the advantages of LED bulbs.
Lee Dong-woo, head of BK Technology Research Center, said, “Indoor LED lights have low output and there is no problem with heat generation,
but street lights and security lights, which are 20 times brighter than household lights and generate 40 times more heat,
dispose of existing facilities and install new LED street lights. I had to do it,” he explained.
BK Technology focused on this point and developed a lamp that can be used by replacing only the bulb without demolishing the existing facility.
In the past, three parts, LED chips, printed circuit boards (PCBs), and heat sinks, were integrated into one through self-developed technology.
Through this integration technology, the heat dissipation structure was simplified and the light source itself could be produced thin and light.
Director Lee said, "Like replacing indoor lights, existing lighting fixtures are used as they are,
and only lamps can be replaced and used as LED street lights, which significantly reduces costs.
" Through this, Director Lee estimated that product cost and initial installation cost,
which were the biggest obstacles to LED replacement, can be reduced by up to 90%.
Cut-off modular LED lamps will be sold for the first time in the public procurement market in 2020
and have been installed in more than 1,000 streetlights.
